Alcohol Can Prevent You From Losing Weight

By Greg White

Enjoying a few alcohol-based drinks every week is a common practice for many people, and authorities agree that moderate alcoholic beverage consumption is safe for healthy people. Nonetheless if you are making an attempt to lose weight you might need to understand a few things about how alcohol is affecting your metabolism.

First, did you know that in the moment you start consuming alcohol your body goes to work metabolizing it? That is a good thing, right? Well, yes, except that for the duration that your body is busy metabolizing the alcohol you ingested, it stops metabolizing fat. That isn't be such a big deal if you rarely drink, but if you like one or two cocktails each day or perhaps a few times each week, it may significantly slow down your weight loss.

Another important consideration is that all alcohol-based drinks and liquors contain calories, and some of them contain a LOT of calories! If you are not paying attention, it's easy to drink far more calories than you propose to, especially if you are having mixed drinks that contain sweet mixes or cream.

As if that weren't enough, alcohol can also excite your appetite so you're feeling hungrier during and following drinking. To add to the injury, being a little inebriated can also lower your inhibitions so you see no harm in enjoying some delicious, fattening food. Fried chicken wings? Cheese fries? A big pizza with everything? Sounds excellent to you. Until the next morning when you remember casually eating an entire day's calories in one sitting.

When you put all of these concerns together, you can clearly see that alcohol consumption maybe isn't a smart idea when you are trying to lose weight.

If you definitely must have some alcohol, try to stick to a single low-calorie drink and then follow it with a huge glass of water. Munch on a handful of nuts or popcorn to quiet cravings for more fat heavy foods, or eat a healthy meal right after you have a drink. Your metabolism will still be impacted, but not quite so much as it'd be by overindulging on high calorie drinks and foods.
